When Lady Gaga stepped onto the big screen with “A star is born”, it launched her into greater fame. However, she is not the first musician to step into the movie industry. Here are ten other musicians who have done the same.

Madonna is very popular for her music, including Grammy-winning songs like “Ray of light” and “Confessions on a dance floor”. However, beyond her music, the “Queen of pop” has also taken the role of actress in movies such as; “Desperately Seeking Susan” (1985), “A league of their own” (1992) and “Dick Tracy” (1990). At the peak of her acting career, she received a Golden Globe Award as the best actress for her role in “Evita”. She also had a short appearance in the James Bond Movie, “Die another day” (2002).

Will Smith

Many people today know Will Smith as an actor, especially for his roles in very successful movies such as “Bad Boys” (1995), “Independence Day” (1996) and “Men in Black” (1997).  What most people don’t know is that Will Smith had a highly successful rap-music career with Jeff Towness under the names “DJ Jazzy Jeff” and “The fresh prince”. The pair’s first Album made it to the Billboard 200, while their first single, “Girls ain’t nothing but trouble”, did very well. Will Smith received nomination for Oscar award, because of his roles in “Pursuit of happiness” (2006) and “Ali” (2001).

Queen Latifah started out as a musician, releasing her first Album, “All Hail the Queen” in 1989. She ventured into the world of acting in 1993, where she starred in a Fox Sitcom (Living single). She featured in this show from 1993 to 1998. She has since gone ahead to release more than four albums, while also starring in hugely successful movies such as “Chicago” and “Barbershop 2”. Queen Latifah belongs to an exclusive group of R&B or Hip-Hop artists to ever receive an Academy Award nomination in an acting role.

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore was the “pop princess” when she released her Album, “So Real” in 1999. However, since then, she has become a movie star. One of her earliest appearances on the movie screen was in “Princess Diaries” (2001), where she played the role of a mean young lady, alongside Anne Hathaway. Before she became incredibly popular for her role in “This is Us”, Moore gathered recognition for her role in “A walk to remember”. Mandy Moore has indicated recently, that she could be returning to the music scene.

Harry Styles was part of the London-based music band, “One Direction” that released hit songs such as “What Makes You Beautiful”, “You and I”, “Perfect” and “Drag me down”. He has now shifted his focus to acting. He made his big screen debut in the lauded “Dunkirk” by Christopher Nolan. The World War II epic movie won an Academy Award.

Mark is well-known for his roles in movies such as “The Departed”, “The Fighter” and “Planet of Apes”. However, before he stepped into the movie industry at all, Mark was a musician. He started his musical career in the Boy band, “New Kids on the Block”, at the age of 13. His first album (under the name Marky Mark) went platinum, it also contained hit songs like “Good Vibrations” and “Wildside”. Mark had his movie debut in “Renaissance Man”, but it was his role in “Boogie Nights” (where he played the role of a dishwater who became a porn actor) that cemented his acting place and shot him to lime light. Mark has been nominated for two Academy Awards, as well as three Golden Globe Awards.

“The goddess of pop” is not known for pop only. The folk-rock mega superstar who is popular for songs such as “I got you babe” and “Bang Bang”, started her acting career in the TV series titled “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” She however broke into limelight with her debut in “Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She went on to feature in top movies such as “Mermaids”, “Moonstruck” (which got her Academy Award) and “The Witches of Eastwick”. Cher has won a Grammy Award, an Academy Award and Three Golden Globe Awards.

Tracy Lauren Marrow, popularly known as Ice-T started his career as an underground rapper and when he signed for Sire records, he released his first album titled “Rhyme pays”. He broke into musical limelight with another album titled “Power”, which went platinum. His first film appearance was in Breakin’ (1984). Ice-T however broke into the movie limelight with his notable role in Surviving the Game. He went on to appear in the television series “New York Undercover”, which earned him NAACP Image Award for best supporting actor.  Ice-T has appeared in several other movies including “Stealth Fighter” and “Sonic Impact”

His role in “Crash” (2004) earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Bing Crosby has won the Academy Award and four of his performances have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
